HOMEWORK Responses to Reading from kids in our classroom:
Being a Student at Chehalem
I like Chehalem Elementary. We are Mustangs. Mighty Mustangs. We are strong and truthful. Every teacher in the district is helpful and kind. Not only the teachers, also the adults and students. I love out new Principal. She is a AWESOME! Welcome!
I really enjoy having a wonderful teacher and having an opportunity to study because there are people who don't have a house (shelter), or food, or clothes like us thanks to our parents.
Also, it doesn't matter that we don't have really cool things like other schools. What matters is...
that our teachers are super helpful and that everybody learns and we have great communication!

Narrative: Moving from The Columbia Plateau to the Coastal Range:
Kathleen was a 9 year old girl She lived in the Columbia Plateau of Oregon. Kathleen was used to the heat. Her dad got a job in Portland. They had to move from the Columbia Plateau to the Willamette Valley. Then they had to move to the Coastal Range. So, she did some research on the Coastal Range. She found research about how it was rainy there. In the Columbia Plateau they didn't have much rain so she wasn't used to rain. She wondered and wondered. She thought that there may be thunderstorms and she was correct. She and her dad moves and she thought the place was very pretty. She got used to the rain and she met some friends at her new school. That was one of the best days of her life!

But, I am sad about leaving some friends behind. But it will be fun. Here, I'm driving in the car listening to music. Two hours pass, I et to the new house. It is a 5 bedroom with a huge backyard. I don't know what I was worried about!

The Boy That Moved
Once there was a boy named Kevin who moved from the Columbia Plateau to the Coastal Range of Oregon with his family. He was very happy that he was moving because he didn't like the fact that the Columbia Plateau had extreme weather. He liked winter but he had to wear 2 layers of shirts and a winter jacket to avoid frostbite when it was winter. But when it was summer, he mostly had to wear his swimming trunks to keep from overheating. So, that's why he was happy that he was moving from the Columbia Plateau to the Coastal Region of Oregon. Luckily, the Coastal region of Oregon doesn't have extreme weather.

What we did this summer:
This summer I went to the Phillipines. We got our nails done. It was great! We went to the L-O-N-G-E-S-T and highest zipline in Asia. It was scary! We went there two times. It was fast, scary, fun, cool, but, again, scary! My family also went on a motorcycle! It is fun and you can ride on it. Six year olds ride with their moms.
I checked out the school that my cousin goes to. Since it's only right across the street. Everyone was staring at us. Their school is different. They have more really old floors and desks. They only have one bathroom in each class. They have more homework, more hours a day, and they also have more months of school! Filipinos work really hard. It's not easy.

For the summer I went to California with my cousins. We went on "Tower of Terror". It was so so fun and scary but I really liked it. When I was in California, I went to my cousin's and slept at her house for 3 days. For the summer I had soccer tournaments and lost all of the games but I had so much fun. I saw a soccer game at the Portland Timber's Field. Before I went to California with my cousin, Ivan. I had the best time. During summer I played outside with my friends. I also slept over at my cousin Ivan's house (with more cousins). I had the best summer!

BOOKS and CHARACTERS:
I think books are awesome. Books are awesome because they have informational text. Books are awesome because they have informational text. Books are also funny or sad. They can have a little or a lot of pages. Book are so little that you can take them anywhere! Books have genres so you can pick what type of book you want like; horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. Books are inexpensive so you can buy a lot of them. Last of all, books take you to another world.

Lucy (in "The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe"):
I think Lucy is gentle and always tells the truth. She is very nice and if she believes in something, she won't stop believing. She really like exploring. She doesn't get scared easily. But if someone hurts her feelings or hurts her, she would get sad and then cry because she's the youngest (that's what I thought).

Reading to Someone:
It was a dog named Gabe who says in his mind that he doesn't understand sadness. Gabe can smell that Tony feels unnaturally heavy. So that his breath doesn't seem to be made out of air. That's what Gabe said. I read it to my dog (Ms. Emely). I think on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be an 8.5 because my dog looked like she was really got nto the book.

WONDER:
Dear Julian,
I'm gonna give you advice about being a little more bit nice. Just because August has a deformed face doesn't mean you get to say mean stuff about August. So, I suggest that you ignore the fact that his face is messed up. And how would you like it if people stared at you because of YOUR face? You should start acting different because calling someone a zombie kid is not nice. August is a good kid so maybe you should be his friend.
Sincerely, Sean (Sean Barry)

What we did on Veteran's Day:
For Veteran's Day we sang the song that the 5th graders sang, "Fifty Nifty United States". I taught my mom. Then we thanked them for saving us. Also for protecting and dying for us and risking their lives for us and going through all of the dangerous stuff there was there. We thank them very much. That's what we did for Veteran's Day.

Veteran's Day
The first thing I did was put up the country's flag. Then started drawing stuff to thank the people who saved our lives. After all of that I was hugging a veteran. I might not do it a lot but I still thank them for doing what they do.

Family:
(Real Story)
So, a couple of weeks ago, my brother and my dad went and had a "dad to son" chat. They went to eat and to the arcade and it looked like they had so much fun together. My dad doesn't get to spend that much time with my brother so he wanted this day to be special for my big brother. My little brother got sad when they said that he wasn't going to go. But then my mom took him to the store and he got his favorite candy and he got really happy. But at the end we were all going to meet each other at the Lloyd Center Mall. I got a pair of shoes and I was really happy. My little brother got his candy, cause really, you can convince him with food. And my big brother got really cool expensive Michael Jordan shoe. They were awesome. He was really happy and excited to get those shoes and he also got a cool video game. We were so happy (including everyone) and at the end we went to see the store called "Spirit Halloween". So we went inside and looked at all of the scary Halloween things and cool costumes. This year I want to be Alice in Wonderland. It's because I love the movie. Anyway, I am very excited because on Sunday me and my mom are going shopping. First we said Saturday but then we had plans. I was fine with it. Thanks for reading!

My favorite thing to do is to hang out with my mom on Monday nights because we hang out together and have a lot of fun. Sometimes we go out to eat or just go home. we might even go to the awesome Mall. I don't know what we are going to do tonight but I hope it's eat out. My favorite night was when we went to "Olive Garden" and got bread sticks.

Friends:
I went to my friend's house for a sleepover after school. First we went to Fred Meyer to buy ice cream. then we watched a movie called "The Mask" while eating popcorn and ice cream. After that, we played marbles and then went to sleep. The next dat on "Dress Like Pirate" day we dressed like Pirates and each of us got 1 dozen doughnuts. Then I went home.

What we can see out our window:
Out my window I can see a pool filed with dirt. I don't know why-- when I moved in it was like that. Out my window I see some bushes and a huge tree. I also see a fence around the pool. I see flowers and a little bit of grass growing from the dirt in the pool. I see two houses across the street from us. I can see the fire station and art of the park. I can also see cars passing and parking in the parking lot. Sometimes I see the kids playing in the pool. I see people walking past our apartments.
Emely Vega Parafox
What I see outside my window is Anthony's house, apartments, grass, the sign that says "Spencer House", cars parked, lights, lots of trees, a sign that says "Madrona", people walking, our mailboxes, bark chips, and houses. I always see something different every day. And when I step outside I see the garbage cans, another park, cars parked on the street, people playing, parents talking, people coming back from school. But that is all I see outside my window and outside my front door.
Khadija Aden
Trees and flowers outside my door. All wet. Next to it is houses and cars. Seeing the pretty birds fly. Big, giant trees nearby waving back and forth. Fences dividing properties of houses. I see wet, muddy, gross mud all over. Looking at all of the dogs being walked, squirrrels running across the road, and birds chirping everywhere.
